1. Adjust Your Workstation
If you spend 8 hours or more working in front of a computer each day, one of the main steps you can take to reduce the symptoms of digital eye strain is by adjusting your workstation. Ensure there is enough space between the computer screen and your eyes. Generally, your computer screen should be at arm’s length from your eyes.
2. Eye Exercises
When we’re engrossed in our devices, we sometimes forget to blink. Blinking helps refresh your eyes and reduces eye fatigue as well. Blink every 5 seconds for 1 to 2 minutes to exercise your eyes. Another eye exercise you can do to alleviate eye strain is by rolling your eyes. If you’ve been staring at the screen for a long period of time, roll your eyes to the left and right a few times to work those eye muscles and relieve the tension.
3. Take Breaks
A great way to prevent digital eye strain is to take frequent breaks from staring at the screen. The 20-20-20 rule states that for every 20 minutes you stare at a screen, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Set a timer at 20-minute intervals and try adopting this rule to reduce digital eye strain. While you’re taking a break, it’s also a good opportunity to stretch as well!
4. Eye Drops
If you’re experiencing discomfort from tired or dry eyes, invest in some eye drops and use them throughout the day to reduce irritation. Look for lubricating eye drops instead of eye drops that reduce redness, as these may worsen dry eye symptoms.
